An announcement was made by the IRS – they’re teaming up with State Tax Agencies and the tax community to combat the increase of scams threatening Taxpayers and tax systems seen this tax season, exploiting vulnerable Taxpayers.
Over the 2023 tax filing season, there have been numerous tax scams on items such as the Fuel Tax Credit, household employee taxes, and the Sick and Family Leave Credit. Scammers and Fraudsters have attempted to make Taxpayers believe they are eligible for these credits, when they are not.
At the request of IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel, groups of tax agencies, and various tax companies and associations have banned in a three-pronged approach to identify frauds and scams, expand outreach and education about these scams, and work to create improvements to better protect Taxpayers moving forward.
The new project has been named the Coalition Against Scam and Scheme Threats (CASST).
More than 60 different organizations have signed on to the initiative such as the Council for Electronic Revenue Communication Advancement and The American Coalition for Taxpayer Rights.
The IRS states that with the combined effort they are receiving, they will improve defenses across the private and public sector, making it more difficult for scams and frauds to slip through the system by next year’s filing season.
