REPORT: Have Tax Return Preparation Websites Sent Sensitive Data to Facebook?

There have been recent reports that some of the large, online tax preparation companies have sent sensitive client financial information to Meta – Facebook’s parent company – through Meta Pixel code, which allows users to track visitor activity on their website and is often used for advertising.

The data is said to include sensitive information such as usernames, legal names, email addresses, income, filing status, refund amounts, dependent information, and more.

Many of these tax return preparation companies have stated that they were unaware this information was being collected by Facebook and that it would be removed.

This is a developing story. The IRS works to closely regulate and control the way tax return filing services use data – whether these companies are in violation of these IRS regulations is not currently clear.
