IRS Delays: What You Need to Know about COVID-19’s Impact on IRS Timelines

The challenges brought on by the events of 2020 have affected everyone and have affected many aspects of life.  For several, this has included taxes.  Some people required a reprieve on IRS Installment Agreements due to Coronavirus layoffs and the inability to pay.  Others rushed to file tax returns to obtain a stimulus payment or CARES Act relief.  If you have had to contact the IRS since March of 2020, you know that the IRS was not immune to the challenges the World faced in 2020.

Over the last few months, and especially the last few weeks, it has become quite evident that the IRS is still behind in processing information after the Government Shutdown sent many of IRS workers home and left a substantial amount of IRS correspondence unopened for several weeks. The IRS has advised Tax Professionals that letters and filings from as far back as July 2020 may still be unprocessed.

In addition to delays in processing inbound correspondence, there are delay issues with outbound correspondence being sent by the IRS as well.  While the IRS is slowly starting to respond to many pieces of correspondence they had received in the height of the pandemic, new challenges present themselves as the correspondence is significantly outdated (with deadlines within the letter set by the outdated date of the letter) and sometimes simply incorrect.

When trying to address these processing delays and outdated correspondence, wait times to speak with the IRS via telephone have been significantly longer that they were pre-pandemic.

The bottom line is that the IRS is struggling to catch up.  The issue for Taxpayers is that these delays often come at the expense of those attempting to resolve an IRS issue at this time.

If you have received outdated or confusing IRS correspondence recently or are still waiting on a response from the IRS, we recommend contacting Bryson Law Firm, LLC today to ensure your matter is addressed properly and as expeditiously as possible.  Contact our office today to schedule a free initial consultation.
